Electoral Commission (EC) chairperson, Jean Mensa has said that the Commission does not intend to disenfranchise eligible voters with the compilation if a new register.

According to her, the Commission respects and understands the significance of a person’s right to vote, therefore, it would not do anything to compromise that right.

“The registration of voters is the critical process in our electoral cycle, the voters register is the bedrock on which credible elections rest, and it is the foundation upon which the sovereign right of a people to choose their national leaders is hinged.

"Therefore in carrying out the voter registration exercise we as a commission are mindful of the significance of the task we are undertaking," Mrs Mensa said at a press conference ahead of the voter registration exercise expected to commence on Tuesday, June 30, 2020.

Prior to the exercise the EC and the ruling New Patriotic Party have been accused by the opposition NDC of intending to use the exercise to disenfranchise Ghanaians by exempting the old voter ID card as identification for the new one.

In a case filed against the EC, the NDC petitioned the Supreme Court to order the Commission to include the old voter ID as an eligible document to allow citizens.

But the Supreme Court rejected this request.

Despite the Court ruling the NDC insists that the exercise is to disenfranchise eligible voters in the country. The EC has, however, debunked this claim stating emphatically that it has no such intentions.

On the contrary the EC says it is to ensure that "all our citizens who qualify are afforded the opportunity to register and cast their votes.

“The Commission is of the view that only eligible citizens should have the right to determine who governs and leads our dear nation and we are determined to ensure that no one is left behind,” the EC Chair said.

She added that all is set for the exercise to begin on June 30 and ends on August 6, 2020 and urged the citizenry to partake in the exercise.
