About 85 schools in the Kpandai District in the Northern Region are expected to receive desks to enhance teaching and learning.
The beneficiary schools were featured in the JoyNews documentary series “Ghana schools of Shame,” which highlighted the poor conditions under which some pupils had to acquire knowledge.
Education Minister, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, speaking in an exclusive interview on Tuesday January 31 said the supply of the desks was necessitated by the documentary.
“Some places had more challenges than the others, so you can understand that we have distributed furniture across the country. As I speak with you tomorrow, about 5,000 pieces of furniture will be going to Kpandai. It will be loading tomorrow heading to areas that have serious challenges.
“You highlighted it and I agree with you that when you highlight a problem we should solve them,” he said.
Subsequently, on Febraury 1, the news team visited the manufacturing site, Benji Furniture, to observe progress of work.
Chief Executive Officer, Benjamin Amoah, said everything was on course for the furniture to be distributed
“Last week I got a call from the Ministry of Education asking if I had desks, they said they need 5,000, can I get it? and I said yes.
“Upper primary 2,500 lower primary 2,500 to more than 80 schools in Kpandai district, so I am ready to deliver it today, February 1,” he said.
Mr Amoah, outlining the mode of delivery said he plans to deliver the desks within few days.
“So now we are going to load two articulators, so when they go we are going to load another container tomorrow [February 2]. I don’t know the exact number of pieces the truck can take, but my estimation is 500,” he added.
The CEO said the furniture will be sent to the district office for distribution.
It would be recalled that JoyNews aired the “Ghana schools of Shame” documentary series to highlight the infrastructural challenges in the country’s education sector.
The documentary was initially received by the Minister as an embarrassment because in his opinion, there are a lot the government is doing in the education sector.
However, the Dr Adutwum said his comments where taken out of context, adding that he is a problem solver.
“I believe in solving problems. I don’t believe so much about disputing and others. So how people took my statement out of context was amazing,” he added.
