The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has cautioned political actors against turning the procurement of presidential planes and helicopters into partisan propaganda, stressing that such acquisitions are matters of national security rather than political convenience.
He issued the caution when the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, paid a courtesy call on him at the Manhyia Palace following last week’s tragic helicopter crash in Obuasi, which claimed the lives of eight people.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II described the incident as a “national concern” and expressed deep sympathy to President John Mahama and the bereaved families.
He underscored the need for Ghana’s political leadership to treat aviation safety and security equipment procurement with the seriousness it deserves.
“Enough of the politicising of the purchase of presidential planes and helicopters. Human lives are at stake here. We must invest to safeguard their safety and efficiency,” the Asantehene said.
According to him, most of the military aircraft currently in use are not in good condition, stressing the need for investment in modern and reliable alternatives.
The Asantehene urged all sides of the political divide to unite in addressing the country’s aviation and security logistics challenges to prevent future tragedies.
