The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and the people of Ghana are celebrating a remarkable feat: Azoumaro Vanessa Salese, a third-year Social Work student, has been confirmed by Guinness World Records as the new record holder for the longest video game marathon.
Vanessa’s record-breaking attempt first gained national attention after YEN.com.gh published her story on 24th July 2024, detailing her goal to play video games continuously for 48 hours.
The marathon began on Friday, 26th July 2024, at the Republic Hall Common Area on the KNUST campus, where students and well-wishers gathered to cheer her on as she displayed exceptional endurance and concentration.
During the attempt, Vanessa played the critically acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima series, surpassing the previous world record of 48 hours set in 2015 by Carrie Swidecki from the United States, who played Just Dance 2015.
After several months of review, Guinness World Records has officially confirmed Vanessa’s achievement, recognising her as the first Ghanaian and African woman to hold this title in the gaming category. Her success has generated widespread pride among young people in Ghana and has drawn admiration from the international gaming community.

Speaking after the confirmation, Vanessa said:
“This was more than just a game - it was a test of resilience, focus, and belief. I wanted to prove that young Africans, especially women, can break boundaries and make history in any field. I’m deeply thankful to KNUST, my friends, and every Ghanaian who supported me through this journey.”
Her achievement cements her place as a trailblazer in competitive gaming and highlights Ghana’s growing influence in the global digital, creative, and entertainment sectors.
