Daffiama Bussie Issa, a district in the Upper West Region lacks adequate health care facilities which in turn have hampered the delivery of quality health care service in the region.
The district which has a population of over 65,000 people can only boast of a polyclinic which is the final referral health centre in the district.
The polyclinic has only one medical doctor which is inadequate to cater for the medical needs of the people.
Speaking in an interview with JoyNews’ Rafiq Salam, the District Director of Health Services, Emmanuel Sam Walke stated that the residents of Daffiama Bussie Issa face a lot of challenges when it comes to health care delivery in the community.
“You have a whole sub District with sometimes only a bed for detention. If you look at the distance from here to Wa its quite a distance there’s no another hospital on the other side except Tumu hospital which is also very far,” he said.
Mr Walke noted that it has been part of plans of the District to get a hospital to befit their status and serve the community but due to lack of structures and requisite human resource especially physician assistance, it hasn't been possible.
He added that it was fortunate for the polyclinic to get back its accreditation to operate.
“The target was to get a district hospital but looking at the structures now we haven’t reached there yet," he said.
The health directorate further appealed to stakeholders to come to their assistance "to ensure that the dream of having a district hospital, well functioning and equipped district hospital in Daffiama Bussie Issa comes to reality."
"We have two wards that are coming up and will soon be completed. We have the female ward and male ward to augment our bed capacity. As we stand now, we don't know where we are getting the beds to furnish these two wards when completed," he added.
Meanwhile, reproductive and sexual health-centred NGO, Marie Stopes Ghana has donated medical equipment to the Dafiamma district health directorate to be distributed among health facilities to enhance service delivery.
