The last of three women convicted in a scam promising people their money could be cleansed of evil spirits has been sent to federal prison.
A judge in Fort Lauderdale on Monday sentenced 22-year-old Olivia Evans to 15 months behind bars. Her mother-in-law and that woman's sister were previously sentenced to prison for their roles in the scam. They also must pay restitution to victims.
Prosecutors say the women persuaded people to send them money to be cleansed of evil spirits in exchange for a service fee. Instead, the women kept the money for themselves.
Prosecutors say they also got victims to send expensive Rolex watches with prisms, claiming they were vortexes into which demons were supposedly sent. The trio kept the watches, two of which were recovered by investigators.
