The National Theatre Tuesday night roared with uncontrolled laughter, persistent thunderous claps and intermittent standing ovations when Nigerian comedians Seyi Law, Hogan and Klint da Drunk took to the stage. The event was Hitz FM’s Laughter Express season two. The Hitz FM presenter who introduced the comedians was better off not saying anything when he was introducing Seyi Law, the 2010 Comedian of the Year in Nigeria. The MC had doubted if Seyi Law’s mother was proud of him. He wondered how a parent would be proud of a son who achieves nothing but ‘Comedian of the Year.’ On entering the stage, Seyi Law, asked, “what is the name of the MC? He is very stupid. Does he know that after the financial crisis, comedians in Nangeria (Nigeria) are now respected more than bankers?” He joked that these days every morning when bankers go to work they first scan through the notice board to be sure if they have not been sacked. In Nigeria, even ladies who formally fawned on bankers now flee from them because “you can be sacked any day.” The Nigerian police received Seyi Law’s most unkind words. “I love Ghana because I don’t see policemen on the streets. In Nigeria after every five minutes’ drive there is a road block with police officers,” he stated. But he didn’t end there. Nigerian police, he said “are very intelligent,” and when the audience laughed apparently mischievously, he quickly supplied “I will explain” amidst more laughter. According to him, Nigerian police are intelligent in receiving bribes. The comedian didn’t leave out his mother in his rib-cracking jokes. African mothers, he said, have special talents and skills in spanking their children, and “they will beat you for something you have done, beat you for something you have not yet done and beat you for something you will do in the future.” Seyi told of an incident where his mother took him out to swim and at the pool. “We met this five-year old white boy and his mom who were also swimming. After 30 minutes the white woman called the son to get out of the pool for them to go home but the boy yelled, ‘Go mom, I still wanna swim. Don’t be silly mom’”. A typical no nonsense African woman, Seyi’s mother pulled off her oversized Nigerian-style headgear and cocked her ear in disbelief. The boy had courted some beating for Seyi. Immediately the white boy left the pool, “my moda pulled me and hit me, pan, pan, ‘if you don’t know and ever try that with me, I will kill you.’” “Haba mom, won’t you even wait for me to bring that to you?” A thunderous clap followed the question. While the audience were still catching some breath, Klint da Drunk took the stage and picked on members of the audience and used them to display superb originality. “If you go out with your landlady’s daughter and think you won’t pay rent again, you are wrong,” he yelled. Directing his attacks at one audience, he said, “My man, you again. Every show you are there; comedy show, you are there, tragedy show, you are there, funeral show, you are there. See, I know you because you are black, that we blacks are now denying you. Go and look for you own race.” At the end of the show, there was unanimity in the views of audience that the show exceeded their expectations. Story by Malik Abass Daabu/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
