President of Division One League’s Planners Athletic Club, George Afriyie, believes whether a country is capable of achieving success or not is not dependent on the rating of its domestic league.
According to him, the fact that we have not been able to lay a proper foundation for our national teams is the rationale behind our recent failures.
In a list released by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFSH), the betPawa Ghana Premier League was not ranked in the Top 10 rated leagues in Africa, something many have associated with the performance of the Black Galaxies at the 2022 African Nations Championships (CHAN) in Algeria.
However, Afriyie, who was Ghana Football Association’s Vice President in the past, believes the ranking of the league does not have an impact on the performance of the team.
“The eventual winners of CHAN, Senegal, I wouldn’t rate their league. I don’t think the Senegalese league is even better than the Ghana Premier League. But I’m still saying that if you lay a solid foundation and you comb around Ghana, you should get quality players to represent Ghana, irrespective of the position of our league in terms of ranking because with Senegal as eventual winners they have rubbished that analogy,” he said on Joy Sports’ Prime Take.
“You agree that when it comes to club competitions [CAF inter-club competitions], if you look at the clubs that have dominated over the years, it’s the north Africans.
“So if you are using that as a measure, going to CHAN we should have expected the north Africans to do better. So for Senegal winning the league, there have rubbished that.”
Ghana exited the CHAN tournament in the quarterfinals stage after losing 2-0 to Niger.
