Pressure on the Electoral Commission to make a full disclosure on its relationship with IT firm, Superlock Technologies Limited (STL), is set to take a dramatic turn as a legal practitioner hints of court action to achieve that.

Nana Obiri Boahen wants to end EC’s silence on queries about the role of STL in the management of Ghana’s electoral process.

“A group of people have approached me as a lawyer to take the matter up and therefore I am not even going to look at it from a political point but from the position of a lawyer. The EC has not made full disclosure to us, they are joking and we are going to drag them to court,” Obiri Boahen told Accra-based Citi FM.

The hullabaloo over STL’s involvement in Ghana’s elections was exhumed after the Minister of Interior, Prosper Bani, issued a statement that the IT firm transmitted tallied results for the EC.

The Interior Ministter issued the statement in the wake of the arrest of three South African ex-police officers for unlawful training and other misdemeanours by the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI). The three South Africans have since been deported.

Mr Bani’s statement contradicts an earlier statement in 2012 by then EC Commissioner, Kwadwo Afari Gyan.

The opposition NPP has been putting pressure on the Commission, demanding an explanation of STL’s actual role Ghana’s electoral process since Mr Bani’s statement.

However, the EC has remained silent – a situation the NPP says will not work towards confidence in the elections coordinator.

“The impression should not be created that it is only the political parties which are prepared to wage this war of ensuring there is transparent and credible election,” Obiri-Boahen said, adding “some individuals are also doing it.”

“Dr. Kwadwo Afari Djan said the EC has no working relationship with STL, but the Minister of Interior in a written statement disclosed that the EC has a working relationship with STL”, he stressed.
