The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced the appointment of Dr Shafic Suleman as the acting Executive Secretary of the Commission.
The appointment by President John Dramani Mahama is in line with the provisions of section 33 (1) of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission Act, 1997 (Act 538).
Dr Suleman will serve in this role pending approval by the PURC Board in consultation with the Public Services Commission.
Dr Suleman brings with him a wealth of experience in energy and sustainability, with a particular focus on energy economics, policy, and law.
He is a senior lecturer at the Institute for Oil and Gas Studies at the University of Cape Coast, Ghana, where he specializes in areas such as energy and petroleum economics, energy finance, climate change, and risk management.
In his academic career, Dr Suleman has earned several distinguished qualifications, including a PhD in Energy and Sustainability from De Montfort University in Leicester, UK.
He also holds an MSc in Energy Management from Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, UK, and a BA in Geography from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi.
Additionally, Dr Suleman is a certified Energy Risk Professional (ERP) from the Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP-USA).
In a statement dated Monday, February 3, PURC expressed confidence that Dr Suleman’s expertise and leadership in energy and sustainability, as well as his background in risk management, will enable him to effectively drive the Commission's strategic objectives.
The Commission also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Dr Suleman in his new role and fully endorses the vision of the President for the electricity, water, and natural gas sectors in the country.
