The first Post-Harvest Mechanization Training Programme has been launched at the Ohawu Agricultural College.

The programme, which will span six weeks, aims to train 500 graduates with a background in agriculture. Over 7,000 trainees across the country are expected to participate in the programme, which will continue until 2026.

Ohawu Agricultural College welcomed 250 trainees for the initial phase, while Wenchi Agricultural College also received 250 trainees to kick-start the programme.

Speaking at the launch, Mr Gebri Osei, the Municipal Director of the National Service Scheme, highlighted the role of the service in securing trainees for the programme. He emphasized the importance of this initiative in enhancing the skills of young graduates and preparing them for the agricultural sector.

Torgbui Awusi III from Afife, who chaired the occasion, expressed his support for the programme and its potential to transform agriculture in the country.

Mr Steven Odarteifio, the Food System Coordinator, explained the significance of the programme and urged trainees to take it seriously. He stated that the country is poised to lead in agricultural transformation, noting that any nation serious about maximizing its commodity supply is one to be recognized. He advised participants to leverage their training and experience to start their businesses, thereby boosting the agricultural economy and creating jobs for the youth.

Some participants shared their excitement about the programme with the media, expressing optimism about the opportunities it presents.

The Principal of Ohawu Agricultural College, Mr Ernest Abiew, spoke about the challenges facing the school, lamenting the serious issues of accommodation, sanitation, and overall inadequate infrastructure. He appealed to the government to come to the aid of the institution.

The programme is funded by the World Food Programme in partnership with MasterCard, marking a significant step towards advancing agricultural education and mechanization in Ghana.
