Makers and Partners, in collaboration with Mothercare International School, DVLA Plaspack, and Zoomlion Ghana Limited, have marked the 2025 World Environment Day with a tree-planting exercise at the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) Critical Care and Emergency Hospital.

Also in line with the “Tree for Life Initiative," the exercise saw the planting of 86 trees at the hospital, with active participation from students and staff of the partner institutions, all to promote environmental sustainability.

Observed globally each year on June 5, World Environment Day serves as a rallying call for individuals, communities, and organisations to take meaningful action towards protecting and restoring our environment.

Mr Wilfred Neneh Addico, Advisory Partner at MAP, noted that " we are replacing trees that didn't survive last year due to harsh weather. This is part of an ongoing commitment; not just a once-a-year gesture "

According to Mr Addico, MAP planted 170 trees in the previous year, with an 80% survival rate, adding that it wasn't just about planting but nurturing.

The Advisory Partner at MAP said the initiative formed part of its Corporate Social Responsibility, giving back to society and inculcating the culture of tree planting in children.

“They have a crucial role to play in environmental sustainability, and they need to be empowered to take action,” he said.

Mr Addico mentioned that as a business, one of its service lines includes Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG); therefore, it was important to highlight the use of resources in our environment prudently to ensure they are sustainable for future generations.

Flight Lieutenant Dede Assasey, Officer at the GAF Critical Care and Emergency Hospital, said considering the hot temperatures of the area, it was necessary to plant trees to create a greener space for patients and visitors, and also play a role in storing carbon to benefit the wider environment.

“The trees give us life, so as much as we keep cutting them down, we should try and replace them, it might not grow with your lifetim,e but for the next generation.

Madam Peace Abasa-Addo, Headmistress of Mothercare International School, said the partnership seeks to instil environmental consciousness in children so they would grow appreciating tree planting as a responsibility.

She further stated that subjects being taught in the School had topics on the conservation of the environment, therefore, such planting exercises were a step to practicalize what they had learnt.

Madam Abasa-Addo mentioned that as part of the event, there would be a durbar where a team from Zoomlion would sensitise the student body on the segregation of waste and the conservation of energy.

Madam Esi Ribeiro, a Consultant at DERA Consult and ESG Advisor to MAP, also underscored the need to ensure the inclusion of children in embracing ESG.

She said there were a number of career opportunities within the ESG space as organisations were seeking to understand the impact of their operations on the environment, so the younger generation could tap into these opportunities.
