The beleagured headmistress of Aburi Girls Senior High School, Mrs. Silvia Asempa, is set to draw more fire after she explained that growing calls for her removal are because of her hard stance against the negative behaviour of some male tutors, including those who entertain student girls in their rooms. Mrs. Asempa fell short of giving details of what usually transpires between the tutors and the students who visit them in their rooms, explaining that she does not want to alarm parents whose wards are in the school. Mrs. Asempa, who has reached the compulsory retirement age of 60, has been in the headlines since Friday, after some teachers opposed to her continuous stay in office objected to her chairing a staff meeting of the school. In an interview with Citi News, Mrs. Asempa said unruly tutors are to blame for her problems. "Those teachers who exhibit indiscipline, truancy, and harbour girls in their rooms are the teachers who do not want me to stay on. One of the teachers harboured some girls in his room and I caught him so he is one of the people I relieved. I have been quiet because I don’t want to alarm parents because I was able to manage it so that is why I kept quiet and they have the opportunity to do what they are doing. "If I had told the world that this is what they were doing, they wouldn’t even have had schools anywhere. So my problem was the fact that I was shielding them. One of the teachers was also relieved of his post because his area of [expertise] was no more being offered as a course by the school” she said. According to her, the teachers decided to get back at her by levelling allegations of mismanagement against her. She said eventually, her superiors constituted a committee to investigate the various allegations, but while the investigations went on, the teachers started "making noise in the media" to get her out of office quickly so they could be shielded under a new head. “But unfortunately for them, the committee came out with its report on Monday January 10, 2011, and recommended that they should be transferred based on the issues I raised against them” she said. Sources within the Education Ministry have hinted that the headmistress has been asked to retire immediately and hand over to the Mampong Akuapim Director of Education in the interim. But Mrs Asempa stated she has not received any such letter from the Ministry. “I am still the substantive Head of Aburi Girls until I am given a letter directing me to hand over. I reached the compulsory retirement age of 60 on the 27th of December 2010. The procedure has not come to an end because I have to finish my auditing, I have to put together a handing over note, we have to change signatures at the bank and then a short handing over ceremony has to be done before I leave finally” she noted. Mrs. Asempa told Citi News she had been impressed upon to extend her stay in the school but turned down the request due to such evil machinations from a number of quarters, including the teachers. She assured parents and other stakeholders that the situation at Aburi Girls was calm. Meanwhile one of the teachers who has been accused of instigating disaffection against Mrs. Asempa has described allegations leveled against male teachers by the headmistress as mere fabrications.
