Senior Specialist in Ophthalmology at Emmanuel Eye Clinic, Dr. Akosua Mensa-Bonsu, has requested that medications for treatment of glaucoma be added to the National Health Insurance Scheme.

This, according to her, will make it affordable for people to frequently get their eyes checked.

Speaking to Asieduwaa Akumia on Prime Morning on Tuesday, the ophthalmologist explained that although consultations are covered under the NHIS, people are still unable to check their eyes due to the cost involved.

"What we’re advocating is that the medications should go into the NHIS to make it affordable for people to access eye care. You can get consultations with the NHIS, but when it comes to the medication, then it becomes a whole different ballgame," she appealed.

Research indicates that in Ghana, the health care system does not currently provide enough incentives for people to seek regular ophthalmologic care; instead, the NHIS prioritises dealing with infectious diseases caused by unsanitary conditions, neglecting glaucoma and other eye diseases.

But the ophthalmologist says people with such conditions cannot be neglected, which is why the institution is advocating for the inclusion of the medications for treatment of glaucoma in the NHIS.

She further indicated that constant treatment for glaucoma halts blindness.

"It’s a gradual process. So you have to be monitored. Your medications may need to be reviewed. You may need more surgeries. Once you’re on treatment, it’s halted," she said.

As part of the world glaucoma week, ophthalmologists are advocating for people to screen their eyes at the nearest eye clinic to ensure their eyes are healthy.

The ophthalmologist also revealed that some hospitals within the Greater Accra region will be providing free glaucoma surgery for affected people. The hospitals include Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Watborg Eye Services in Kasoa, and Dziram Eye Clinic on Spintex Road.
