President Mills is assuring lecturers of the public universities that the government will work expeditiously to address their grievances. The lecturers have been on strike for over two weeks in protest over poor conditions of service compelling the president to institute a seven-man committee to investigate the matter and make recommendations accordingly. The committee completed its deliberations and presented its report to the president on Wednesday. “It is a matter of regret to me that things took this turn,” the president said while receiving the committee’s report. “I want everybody to be assured that we do what is right and proper and when there are disputes I will just urge that we exercise restraint and then we find ways of finding lasting solutions to this problem. “There is no problem that cannot be solved,” President Mills counseled, adding that the ministries of Finance and Education will work with the “utmost dispatch” in order to end the over two-week long strike. He appealed to all to put the national interest ahead of their personal interests. Play the attached audio for excerpts of President John Mills comments.
