President John Evans Atta Mills has joined calls for the US economic sanctions against Cuba to be lifted.
The economic embargo was placed in the 1960’s when Cuba nationalized the properties of the United States citizens and corporations.
At a meeting with President Mills Monday, Cuban Vice President Esterban Lazo Hernandez appealed to Ghana to help Cuba in the fight to get the ban lifted and the country’s five heroes in jail in the US released.
President Mills said Ghana supports calls for the release of the Cuban detainees.
The president said Ghana appreciates the support it enjoys from Cuba and promised to ensure that the relationship between the two countries is deepened.
“We live in a world where things are changing, and there is a need for us, those with similar backgrounds and challenges to get together to know how we can help one another.”
President Mills has also accepted an invitation from the Cuban government to visit that country.
