President Mills will today meet the umbrella body of Vice Chancellors to deliberate on how to end the university teachers’ strike.
It follows growing fear that the universities may be shut down should the strike stretch into week three on Monday.
Ahead of Friday's meeting however, a government delegation on Thursday visited the University of Ghana campus to assure students of efforts to avert a closure.
Deputy Education Minister, Dr. J.S. Annan who addressed the students, said, “Don’t be worried, your future, your education and more importantly, your investment, made by you and your parents and your supporters is safe.”
He assured the students that the universities will remain open, contrary to fears that the universities will be closed down if the strike enters its third week.
The National Union of Ghana Students has welcomed the move. But its President Anthony Afriyie Abotsi said what the students really want is for government to show greater commitment towards getting the striking lecturers back to the classroom.
He said the government had been assuring the teachers of paying them their due since June and that the government should make good its promises and assurances to get the teachers back to the classroom.
