A 28-year-old small scale miner, Collins Adu, who stole a motorbike worth GH¢13,500 and used it for two weeks has been sentenced to one day imprisonment and a fine of GH¢ 8,400 by the Tarkwa Circuit Court.
Adu would be compelled to serve 7 years imprisonment with hard labour, if he fails to pay the fine imposed on him.
He pleaded guilty to unlawful entry and stealing, begged the court for forgiveness.
Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Abraham Ayitey told the court presided over by Mrs Hathia Ama Manu that, Francis Arhin, the complainant is a resident of Bawdie in the Wassa Amenfi East Municipality and a commercial motor rider, while Adu resided at Bogoso in the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality.
On October 19, 2024, the complainant parked his unregistered Haojin motor bike in his house at night and retired to bed, woke up the following day only to detect that it had been stolen.
Chief Inspector Ayitey said the complainant alerted his neighbours and friends in Bawdie and its environs to help him find his missing motorbike.
Prosecution said on Sunday October 27, 2024, around 2:00 am Adu was seen at Wassa Bawdie riding the complainant’s motorbike and he was apprehended and sent to the Bawdie Police station to aid investigations.
He said the complainant was invited over to the police station, he went and identified the motorbike as his own.
Chief Inspector Ayitey said Adu confessed to the crime and told the police that, about two weeks ago, between 12:00 midnight to 1:00 am, he sneaked into the complainant’s house and stole his motorbike and has since been using it for his errands until he was arrested.
