Mining should adhere to the law – Kwakye Ofosu

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the spokesperson for President Mahama, has emphasised that mining in Ghana must strictly adhere to the country’s laws, asserting that illegal mining must not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Speaking on JoyNews' AM Show on 20th January, Mr. Ofosu condemned the rising prevalence of illegal mining, which he stated is causing significant environmental degradation and disrupting local communities.

“You cannot simply wake up one day and decide to extract minerals behind your house; this is not something that can be allowed in Ghana,” he declared, stressing the importance of a structured and lawful approach to mining.

He further clarified that all mining operations must be conducted within a clearly defined legal framework to ensure they are carried out responsibly and sustainably. “There must be a clear framework for mining operations, and if mining rights are to be transferred, it must be done in a way that protects the environment and involves all relevant stakeholders,” Mr. Ofosu explained.

Additionally, Mr. Ofosu outlined the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) unwavering commitment to addressing illegal mining and ensuring that the mining sector operates within the bounds of the law.

“We will take all necessary measures to address the issue of illegal mining and ensure the sector is properly regulated,” he affirmed, reiterating that all mining activities must be conducted lawfully.

“Mining must be carried out in accordance with the law to safeguard Ghana’s resources and the environment for future generations,” he concluded.
