Mobile Communication operators have been called upon to assist in the development of deprived communities they operate in as part of their social responsibilities.
Mr Frank Asante, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Tema Municipal Assembly, made the call at the opening of a branch of Millicom Ghana Limited, operators of Tigo Mobile phone provider on Friday in Tema.
He asked Communication Operators not only to show interest only in their profits but should also assist District, Municipal and Metropolitan assemblies to improve the living conditions of rural communities. Mr Asante suggested the adopting of schools in rural areas to provide them with their basic needs at their contribution towards quality education.
He commended management of Tigo for opening the Centre, which the PRO noted would help in creating jobs for the youth and boost revenue generation to support the development of the Municipality. Mr Asante called on the staff to ensure efficiency and wider coverage to avoid criticism from customers.
Mr Gareth Townley, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Tigo, said the growth rate of the industrial city, motivated the opening of the centre for business entrepreneurs to have access to fast communication. The Centre, he said, would open 24 hours in the week and urged customers to feel free to approach the staff for quality service. Mr Daniel Pabby, Tema Area Manager of Tigo, said the network would be extended to the surrounding communities. The Tema Mantse, Nii Adjei Kraku II and Mr Townley jointly cut the tape for the Centre to start work.
