The value of mobile money transactions in Ghana climbed to GH¢447.4 billion in February 2026, reinforcing the platform's dominance as the preferred channel for digital payments and financial inclusion across the country.
Data contained in the latest Summary of Economic and Financial Data released by the Bank of Ghana on March 17, 2026, reveals a steady upward trajectory in mobile money usage, with the February figure representing a significant increase from the GH¢316.2 billion recorded during the same period last year.
The central bank's comprehensive report, which provides a snapshot of the nation's economic and financial health, shows that mobile money platforms processed 899 million transactions during the month. While this represents a moderation from the 949 million transactions recorded in January and the 982 million peak registered in December 2025, the year-on-year comparison tells a story of robust growth—up from 698 million transactions in February 2025.
Agent network expands
The infrastructure supporting Ghana's mobile money ecosystem continues to expand, with registered agents increasing to 976,000 in February 2026, compared to 896,000 in the same month last year.
More significantly, the number of active agents—those regularly facilitating transactions—rose to 515,000 from 411,000 over the same period, indicating deepening engagement at the grassroots level.
The balance held on mobile money float accounts stood at GH¢33.9 billion in February, a slight decline from January's GH¢35.6 billion but substantially higher than the GH¢27.9 billion recorded in February 2025.
Interoperability gains traction
Transactions across different mobile money networks through the interoperability platform continue to gain momentum. The value of interoperability transactions reached GH¢4.9 billion in February, up from GH¢2.9 billion in the corresponding period last year. The number of such transactions increased to 27.2 million from 19.7 million over the same timeframe, reflecting growing seamlessness in the digital payments landscape.
Account penetration deepens
The report indicates that registered mobile money accounts climbed to 81.8 million in February, up from 81.2 million the previous month, underscoring continued expansion in digital financial access. Active accounts—defined by the central bank as those that transacted at least once in the preceding 90 days—stood at 26.5 million, representing a substantial base of regular users.
Broader economic context
The mobile money data forms part of the Bank of Ghana's broader macroeconomic and financial update, which also captured declining inflation trends, interest rate movements, exchange rate developments, and capital market performance. The GSE Composite Index, for instance, showed remarkable year-to-date growth of 46.7 per cent as at February 2026, with market capitalisation expanding to GH¢235.7 billion.
The February figures highlight the sustained role of mobile money as a key driver of digital payments and financial inclusion in Ghana's evolving payment systems landscape, even as transaction volumes show seasonal fluctuations.
