Ghana’s largest private media company, Multimedia Group Ltd, operators of Joy FM, MultiTV and other broadcast and online media brands, has attracted interest from South African giant, Times Media Group.
In what industry observers say is one of the most significant coming together of West African and South African media organizations to date, the two media groups are set to expand beyond their respective borders.
Times Media Group, owns leading South African media and entertainment assets, prominent brands including the Sunday Times, the Sowetan, the Herald etc as well as various innovative content delivered across a variety of channels. The transaction gives Times Media Group a minority stake in Multimedia Group.
The deal is in line with the parties' plans of expanding into the West African market. Multimedia Group's CEO Kwasi Twum, said, "this is an exciting time for our business as we consolidate our local operations and build on our expansion into the wider West African market."
The Chief Finance Officer of Multimedia Group, Ken Ansah, indicated in an interview that the deal strengthens its balance sheet and provides the muscle to drive the business' growth agenda.
The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE)-listed media giant, TMG, is paying R144 million for the 32.26 percent stake in Multimedia Group Limited.
