The National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE) has strongly condemned the actions of the Gborbu Wulomo, a 63-year-old traditional leader, for arranging the betrothal of a 12-year-old girl.
Describing the incident as deeply concerning and unacceptable in today's society, the NCCE emphasised that such cultural practices have no place in a modern democracy.
In a press release issued on Tuesday, April 2, the NCCE reiterated that practices like these are illegal and must be unequivocally rejected.
They called for immediate denouncement of such actions to prevent the establishment of harmful precedents.
“The National Commission for Civic Education, NCCE is appalled by the recent announcement by the Nungua Traditional Council that, a 12-year-old girl has been betrothed to a 63-year-old Gborbu Wulomo of Nungua, Nuumo Borketey Laweh Tsuru XXXIII.”
“The Commission wishes to express concern about this development and emphasises that cultural practices that are illegal and unconstitutional have no place in our democracy,” an excerpt of the statement said.
Nuumo Borketey Laweh XXXIII, the 63-year-old Gborbu Wulomo, has come under intense criticism following the circulation of a video showing his marriage to 12-year-old Naa Okromo.
The traditional marriage ceremony took place on Saturday, March 30, 2024, in Nungua.
Despite facing backlash, Gborbu Wulomo defended his actions, claiming that the young girl would not be required to fulfil typical marital obligations.
