The Kumbungu District Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has engaged political party youth activists in the area on peace and tolerance.
The event, which formed part of the Preventing and Containing Violent Extremism project, which is funded by the European Union, sought to ensure peace as the country approached this year’s general election.
Madam Janet Ameseya, Kumbungu District Director of NCCE, speaking during the event at Kumbungu, said even though the country had a stable democracy, efforts must be made to consolidate the peace in the country.
She emphasised that “As the nation gears up for the 2024 elections, it is imperative to foster a culture of peace and tolerance even though Ghana has had a successful conduct of elections eight times in succession culminating in peaceful transitions and transfers of political power from ruling parties to opposition parties.”
She touched on violent extremism and said it remained a major threat in the sub-region and expressed the need for the community members to be alert in their communities towards preventing such acts in the country.
Chief Inspector Walliam Benefo, Kumbungu District Police Station Officer urged the youth to desist from violence and focus on promoting peace and tolerance amongst themselves.
Reverend Joseph Sackey, a resource person, urged the people to be change agents and embrace peace and tolerance.
He emphasised that “Political issues are different from ethnic or religious or cultural differences and so if we treat every issue as it is, then we will see that it will be easy for us to tolerate, understand and forgive each other easily.”
