The Ashanti Region branch of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC)is raising questions about the quality of teaching in the region. This is because some school children in the region do not know who the president of Ghana is. In fact, they mention NPP flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo as the sitting president when the regional minister visited some schools on “my first day at school” weeks ago. The party’s Ashanti Regional Secretary, Joseph Yamin told Joy News Seth Kwame Boateng the incident is a clear demonstration that the children may not be receiving the best of tuition after all. “Knowledge are imparted into the students by the teachers, and so if students in school today cannot identify who their president is, who their regional minister is then it means that teachers are not teaching the students what they are supposed to teach them. Or the students themselves are not prepared to learn due to certain factors emanating from their homes and communities.” But Abraham Kwaku Bonsu, the Ashanti Regional Secretary of GNAT, said the party’s assessment was unfortunate. He said for the minister to ask children at that level current affairs was misplaced, saying the embarrassment would have been avoided had the questioner accustomed himself with their syllabi. He explained that children at lower primary mainly do environmental studies and other subjects with no bearing on current affairs. Story by Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
