Editor-In-Chief of the New Crusading Guide says the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is attempting to ‘smuggle’ relief(s) denied them by the Supreme Court into reliefs it was granted.
Analysing the apex court’s ruling on reliefs that were denied and granted, Kweku Baako Jnr said the Court clearly stated that the Election Commission (EC) could exclude the old voters’ ID card from the upcoming registration exercise.
Therefore, the NDC’s tactic to forcefully include and interpret the judgement that, EC must include the voters’ card is a ‘crafty but not too smart’ agenda, he said.
“When I take a look at the reliefs, I see that the attempts or the request to include the old voters’ ID card during registration exercise were all denied.
“From [reliefs] four to eight were explicitly denied. You can’t smuggle all that has been denied into relief three and seek to make an advocacy,” he told Samson Lardy on Joy FM’s Newsfile Saturday.
Mr Baako then added, “I think it is a very crafty but not too smart way of smuggling what was denied into relief three that appears to be partially granted in my opinion because it was subjected to CI 126,”
The Supreme Court on Thursday in a unanimous decision ruled that the EC has the power to compile a new register without using birth certificate and voters ID card by prospective voters as proof of identification.
But, the Member of Parliament for Bolga East, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine said the NDC can rely on relief three which was granted the Supreme Court to prevent the EC excluding the old voters’ ID card.
According to him, relief three charges the EC not to implement policies that could arbitrary disqualify or prevent an electorate from voting.
“In the case of relief three we could enter judgement and serve it on the EC, and asked them to accept the voters ID card for purposes of registration because [the current policy they are implementing right now can disenfranchise many Ghanaians.].”
