The former Country Treasurer of Barclays Bank, Simon Dornoo, formally takes over as Managing Director of the country’s biggest bank, Ghana Commercial Bank today.
Mr. Dornoo succeeds Lawrence Adu Mante whose contract ended earlier last year but was asked to stay on until a replacement was found.
He was selected by the board from among three high profile individuals, including former Director General of SSNIT Charles Asare and Stanbic boss Alhassan Andani.
A Chartered Accountant by profession, he brings to the bank a wealth of experience in banking and finance in Ghana as well as considerable international exposure.
There are high expectations of Mr. Dornoo. Shareholders of the bank are particularly eager to see how Mr. Dornoo will use his 19 years in the highly competitive, strictly private sector banking environment both in Ghana and abroad to bring about massive transformation at GCB where government interference as majority shareholder, though has been one major advantage, appears to have done more harm than good in recent years.
