General Electric has unveiled an LED light bulb that will only consume nine watts and will last for 17 years.
The company said it will market an LED light bulb towards the end of the year that will last 25 times longer than an incandescent unit.
The unit is designed to replace a common or garden 40 watt bulb and its LED light will pump out 450 lumens in a directed manner.
But the bulb, at least in its first iteration, won't be cheap - it will probably cost around $50.
GE said it designed the Energy Smart LED bulb to direct light downward on the surface and not at the top of a lampshade.
John Strainic, general manager at GE Lighting, said: "This is a bulb that can virtually light your kid's bedroom desk lamp from birth through high school graduation."
GE rates its life at 25,000 hours - that's 17 years at four hours a day. It will be far cooler than incandescent bulbs and cooler than CFL lights.
GE Lighting markets a number of other LED lighting bulbs.
