Legislator for the South Dayi Constituency, Rockson Dafeamekpor has urged parents of students who died at the Kumasi Academy to sue state authorities over the deaths.
Four students of Kumasi Academy in the Ashanti Regional Capital have died under mysterious circumstances since November 29, a situation that has caused fear and pandemonium among students and parents alike, some of whom have trooped to the school to withdraw their wards.
Speaking on Joy News TV’s AM Show Wednesday, MP for South Dayi Constituency, Mr. Dafeamekpor said someone has to answer for these deaths because the parents were assured that their wards would be safe in the school but the contrary has happened.

“Parents should sue”, he said.
“I was assured that the conditions prevailing in the boarding house are such that my son’s health will not be at risk and under those I agree to leave him and now he dies, someone should be telling me something. I should have a remedy against the state," he said.
Parents will begin to initiate legal action against the state and then officials will wake up, he added.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) lawmaker also suggested, contrary to the position of Municipal Authorities, that the school be closed down temporarily. This he believes will “give ample time to the authorities to fumigate the school since sanitation issues have been raised”.
Head of Disease Surveillance at the Ghana Health Service told the AM show that they have tested for meningitis and influenza, both of which proved negative but they are running more tests to ascertain the nature of the illness which is causing the deaths.
He also confirmed that as of Wednesday morning four deaths [three boys and a girl] and 61 cases had been recorded since November 29.
A parent who also spoke to the show complained that “school authorities are not being transparent” in the handling of the matter.
They are withholding information and that’s not the best thing to do, he complained. Earlier this year, when they invited us to deliberate on the issue, none of them [authorities] came to talk to us, we just went back home after sitting for hours.
Earlier this year, some three deaths of students were reported in the same school, also under mysterious circumstances.
