The governments of Ghana and Nigeria have been urged to collaborate and work together towards the improvement of women's livelihoods in West Africa.

The two countries ought to synergise, put together resources, and create platforms for women to thrive in Africa and across the world.

Nigerian-based lawyer and business development expert, Tine-Anona Ifunanya, who spoke on Joy Prime’s morning show, opined that an affiliation between the two countries provides an opportunity for better implementation of policies.

She is of the view that West African women are not being supportive because they feel neglected in certain fields due to their motherhood responsibilities.

Explaining to KMJ, she said, "All a lot of women do is take care of their kids, give birth, and when the kids eventually grow up, they’re 50. They cannot work actively.

"So, I just think that government has a lot to do, and it has to be in the form of synergy, where the Nigerian government is synergising with the Ghanaian government to make sure that across West Africa, women are given more platforms to thrive. That’s where we wouldn’t be saying that they’re not supporting each other."

Aside from the governments, the business development expert suggested that families need to help correct the notion that girls are only supposed to be in the kitchen. Instead, they need to teach their female kids to take up male duties in every circumstance.

Also contributing to the show, the convener of the Visionary African Women Summit, Chinwe Lilian, stated that non-governmental organisations are putting in efforts to support females, but there is no improvement because the governments have failed to play their role.

"There are a lot of NGOs that are mostly funded by women, but they cannot do it alone. We need the government to play its part. There should be a synergy between the government and NGOs..."

As a humanitarian, her foundation sensitises young girls’ every now and then on girl-child education and female empowerment.

But she thinks it is not enough for the betterment of their lives because the organisation has inadequate resources to financially support them.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian female advocates are in Ghana to hold the 2023 Visionary African Women Summit between Thursday, June 22nd, and Friday, June 23rd, at the Ecobank Ghana PLC, 2 Morocco Rd, Accra, Ghana.

The event is an annual event put together by the Lilian Ike Foundation, a registered non-governmental organisation set up in 2019 with headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria.

The summit is a platform designed to bring a thriving community of African women from all fields of human endeavours together to inspire, empower, and equip them to be nation-builders.

Beyond being a forum where they educate, empower, and advocate for women to achieve their potential for a better society devoid of sentiments, they are also targeted at promoting peace and creating sustainable development in Africa.

The theme for the summit is dubbed "Building Women Against All Odds: Breaking Barriers, Building Bridges." All females are urged to partake in the event.

Speakers of this year’s edition include the wife of Vice President, Samira Bawumia; Minister for Women Affairs and Social Development of Nigeria, Pauline Tallen; the Director General of the National Centre for Women Development (NCWD), Dr Asabe Valita Bashir; media personality with The Multimedia Group Limited; and co-host of Prime Morning on Joy Prime, Roselyn Felli, among other prominent individuals from Ghana and Nigeria.
