The military Special Task Force (STF) keeping the peace in Jos, the Plateau State capital, was yesterday thrown into great mourning as Mrs Rifkatu Umaru, wife of the task force commander was killed and her body dumped in a nearby well.
This was also further confirmed by the closure of Rifkatu’s Reevee Heritage Kitchen Restaurant, located at the National Commission for Museum and Monument which used to witness a beehive of activities, even as unsuspecting customers were wondering what could have happened to the restaurant especially as yesterday was Monday.
When contacted on phone, the commander, the husband of the deceased, Brigadier-General Hassan Umaru, said he was at home mourning.
He told THISDAY that “that is the way it happened o.” He had to stay at home to receive sympathisers.
It was gathered that the deceased, an indigene of Bokkos Local Governmnet area of the state, went for a wedding in her hometown, Bokkos, on Friday.
She was returning to Jos on Saturday evening to their residence at Army Engineers Quarters, Zaria Road, Jos at about 10pm when she was allegedly attacked and killed by unknown persons before she could get to her quarters.
Her body was subsequently discovered in the well by somebody who had gone to fetch water the following day, who then raised the alarm which attracted others to the scene and her body was brought out.
Witnesses said her body was removed from the well by men of the STF and deposited at the Air Force Military Hospital in Jos.
The spate of killings in Jos has become a source of great worry to the state government and the security agents.
Just on Friday at about 2.30am, seven people were killed at a Kwall village in Miango District of Bassa Local Government council of the state, while four others were seriously injured in another attack.
The deceased were given a mass burial, while the injured are still recuperating at the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH).
The development has compelled Governor Jonah Jang and heads of security agencies to go on an emergency close-door state security meeting which is still on as at the time of filing this report.
Attendants at the meeting, THISDAY gathered, included the new Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abdulrahman Akano, SSS and some army chiefs in the state.
