Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi, has said President Goodluck Jonathan has displayed uncommon qualities of statesmanship by carrying the people along through taking immediate measures to ameliorate the initial pains experienced on the deregulation of the downstream sector of the petroleum industry.
The governor, who made a broadcast to the people of the state Monday, shortly after the President addressed the nation on the matter, said that in spite of the fact that the President and the Governors were agreed on and are still committed to the need for complete deregulation of the downstream sector of the petroleum industry for the good and progress of the country, the president has graciously reduced the pump price of premium motor spirit from N138 to N97 per litre.
This, as well as his palliative measures in the transport sector, the Governor reasoned were among his commendable responses to the challenges of the exercise.
While commending President Jonathan for displaying manifest qualities of statesmanship, Obi also commended the organised labour for reciprocating the gesture and urged them to always work for the interest of the country.
He called on those he referred to as “failed politicians” who suddenly turned themselves to overnight “comrades” during the fuel subsidy protest in order to derail the progress of the country to have a rethink and resolve to work together with President Jonathan who he noted meant well for the overall interest of the country.
He enjoined Anambra people and all men of goodwill to appreciate the President’s show of love and compassion for the people and continue to identify with his good intentions for the country, adding that the support has become critical as the President renewed the war against corruption and also expressed the determination to reduce the cost of governance as well as initiate programmes that would turn around the economy of the country.
He also reminded the people of the state and indeed the entire South-Easterners that they voted overwhelmingly for the President in the last general election and should realize that they are even faced with the more critical task of supporting him by ensuring that the mandate given to him remains inviolate.
