Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Edward Omane Boamah, has criticised the status of the Agenda 111 hospital projects initiated under President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration.
In a Facebook post on Saturday, 4th January 2025, Dr Boamah stated that none of the hospitals are currently functional, despite significant resources being allocated to the initiative.
He also highlighted the need for an estimated $1.4 billion to complete the projects.
Dr Boamah’s remarks followed President Akufo-Addo’s final State of the Nation Address (SONA), delivered on Friday, 3rd January, 2025, in which the President underscored the transformative potential of the Agenda 111 initiative, describing it as a cornerstone of Ghana’s healthcare development.
Launched during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the programme aimed to construct 111 district and regional hospitals, including psychiatric facilities, to address critical gaps in the country’s healthcare infrastructure.
While some progress has been made, the projects remain unfinished as President Akufo-Addo’s tenure ends in barely three days.
President Akufo-Addo has urged President-elect John Dramani Mahama to prioritise completing the Agenda 111 projects.
The outgoing President expressed optimism that the initiative would significantly enhance healthcare delivery across Ghana if fully realised.
However, Dr Boamah argued that the lack of operational facilities under the initiative highlights deficiencies in planning and execution during Akufo-Addo’s administration.
"None of the Agenda 111 hospitals is functioning. Uncompleted! US$1.4billion needed to complete."
The Agenda 111 programme, while ambitious, has faced challenges ranging from funding shortfalls to delays in construction.
