Ranking Member on the Foreign Affairs Committee in Parliament, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, on March 3, met with Ghanaian students who evacuated from Ukraine to Romania for refuge.

At Bucharest on Wednesday, Mr Ablakwa, who is also the MP for North Tongu interacted with his compatriots when he hosted them for lunch.

He used the opportunity to assess their current conditions.

According to him, this is to help understand their situation and the steps government should take to assist them.

"I do this not merely because it is a constitutional imperative of oversight imposed on Parliamentarians; there is a higher obligation of our common humanity and nationhood. I have been greatly inspired by the amazing stories of survival and resilience as narrated by our heroic compatriots," he added.

Mr Ablakwa also made a modest donation into the NUGS-Ukraine welfare account.

He further assured the Ghanaian students that "the entire nation led by government is with them in prayers and solidarity. Evacuations shall continue and we would also never forget their colleagues who remain trapped in Ukraine, particularly those in the city of Sumy."

"Together, as one nation with a common humanity, we shall ensure the complete protection and rehabilitation of our beloved citizens," Mr Ablakwa continued.

In a Facebook post, the MP indicated that Romania now hosts the largest number of Ghanaian students. An estimated number of 200 students, expected to be flown to Ghana.

Meanwhile, Mr Ablakwa says Ghana owes a debt of gratitude to the government of Romania for the continuous support to Ghanaian nationals amidst the tension in the Russia-Ukraine region.

"I salute Ahmed Tijani Abubakr of our diplomatic mission in Prague for his impressive consular services which have been praised by the students. The Romanians have been awesome with their exceptional kindness," he said.

On Tuesday, March 1, the first batch of Ghanaian nationals evacuated from Ukraine arrived home.

They were rescued through neighbouring countries by land due to the shutdown of Ukraine’s airspace since the beginning of the unrest in the country.

The Ghanaian nationals were welcomed by the Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister, Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong.

According to the Foreign Affairs Ministry, as of February 28, 49 Ghanaians, including one child were received by the Diplomatic Mission in Prague and are waiting to be processed for departure to Ghana.

In Slovakia, 25 Ghanaians were received by the Diplomatic Mission. About 81 Ghanaians arrived in Poland and in Hungary, 221 Ghanaians arrived and are on their way to the city of Budapest.
