NPA trains journalists in Volta region on fuel pricing

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has organised training for journalists in the Volta Region on fuel pricing and fuel quality.

The training workshop was aimed at equipping journalists in the Volta Region with the needed knowledge on petroleum pricing formula and quality determination to enable them to provide informative reportage.

Journalists were taken through topics like; fuel marking, petroleum price build-up, and price deregulation.

Head of Control at the Quality Assurance Division of the NPA, Ubeidalah Saeed Kutia noted during his presentation that, the NPA is committed to making sure petroleum products are of high quality for its cherished customers.

Mr. Kutia noted that the NPA will at all times deploy its marking schemes and quality control measures in order to have a reduction of adulteration and dilution of petroleum products.

He said the NPA aims at making sure the country is able to maintain the highest standards of its petroleum products always. Mr. Kutia added that the average rate of petroleum products in regard to specifications is less than 2% annually.

He urged consumers to help the Authority by reporting or lodging complaints on fuel adulteration within 48 hours for prompt redress.

Head of Economic Regulation at the NPA, Ibrahim Abass Tasunti, who made a presentation on the pricing formula of petroleum products explained that the pricing of petroleum products is dependent on the supply and demand on the local and international markets.

”Ghana consumes more petroleum products than what it produces, hence the disparities”.  Out of the 150,823 barrels of crude oil produced in the country daily, Ghana owns only 27,148 barrels representing 18 per cent,” Mr. Tasunti said.

Mr. Abass Tasunti noted that geopolitics, political unrest, pandemics, natural disasters, decisions taken by major oil producers to reduce production to increase the mobility and strength of the US dollar, are factors that affect the pricing of petroleum products.
