The Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Alhaji Inusa Fuseini, has blamed the erstwhile New Patriotic Party (NPP) government for creating a problem in the country's educational system. According to him, the confusion surrounding this year's Senior High School (SHS) admissions is the snowballing effect of a bad decision taken by the Kufuor government. The SHS duration was changed to four years in 2007 but with six more months left to begin its implementation, many schools are faced with inadequate classrooms and dormitories for the increased number of students. The Daily Graphic newspaper reported Monday that the Ministry of Education has tasked groups of consultants to work feverishly to address the problem. Reacting to the report, Alhaji Fuseini, who was speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana programme Monday, questioned whether the past government made complementary decisions to accommodate the additional year. He stated that it was due to these difficulties that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) kicked against the 4-year duration when it was proposed. He said that though a forum was held during which it was agreed to revert to the three years, the four years duration will still remain until a white paper issued by government goes to parliament. He maintained that even “a white paper does not change the law.” Commenting on the issue, Vice President of FIDA International Ursula Owusu, who was a co-panelist on the show, stated that “while the politicians quibble, we are mortgaging our children’s future”.
