Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Freddie Blay is rooting for e-voting for the party's upcoming parliamentary primaries.
Mr Blay observed that there are so many proposals including e-voting and handpicking of candidates currently before the National executive committee for adoption.
He, however, insists that e-voting will be a better way of conducting the primaries in the wake of Covid-19. Mr Blay explained that he has examined how the e-voting works and is convinced would enhance the party's democratic credentials.
The chairman added that the approval of electronic voting will not only place the NPP above other political parties in the country but also change the dynamics of voting in the country.
He cited countries like Malawi and South Korea who have successfully implemented the innovation.
Mr Blay said the existence of reliable data for delegates would make the e-voting process the best way to conduct the NPP primaries in a way that prevents physical contacts amongst delegates at polling centers.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has suspended its parliamentary primaries which was originally scheduled for April 25, 2020, to elect parliamentary candidates in constituencies where the party has sitting Members of Parliament ahead of the 2020 General Elections.
The decision to suspend the primaries was taken at the National Steering Committee meeting held on Tuesday, April 14, 2020, due to the ban on social gatherings as part of national efforts towards the containment of the Covid-19 epidemic.
Mr Blay in an interview with JoyNews' Kwesi Parker-Wilson revealed that the National Executive Committee (NEC) is yet to meet to fashion out a detailed roadmap for the conduct of the primaries and the best approach to adopt during the crisis.
He also disclosed that NEC will convey a meeting shortly after the ban on public gathering is lifted to come up with a date for the conduct of the primaries.
He was optimistic that such a meeting is likely to take place by the end of May 2020.
