The New Patriotic Party (NPP) constituency party office in Kyebi erupted with joy and jubilation as delegates and supporters accompanied the wife of Samuel Atta Akyea to submit the nomination forms on his behalf to run as MP for Abuakwa South.
The crowd behind Phillipina Akyea last Thursday, chanted with excitement “We need Atta Akyea!” and “4 more for Nana, 4 more for Honorable Atta Akyea.”
The Minister for Works and Housing has been the MP for the constituency since President Nana Akufo-Addo passed the baton to him in 2008.
The lawyer is running for a fourth term and there is talk amongst party delegates is that this contest is likely to be his easiest as a prospective contestant Kingsley Agyemang, personally withdrew from the race and threw his weight behind the incumbent MP
There is one hurdle, however, to surmount as he had to go past Gloria Boadu.
Receiving the forms on behalf of the party, the constituency chairman, Boakye Yiadom called for unity and decorous campaign devoid of name-calling and mudslinging.
Phillipina Akyea, a Managing Partner of Zoe, Akyea & Co and Founder & Executive Director of the Pinamaa Foundation, complimented the supporters of all the candidates for their decorum.
“We are one people and we have the same vision - the development of Abuakwa South Constituency and the advancement of the nation Ghana as a whole. The overall interest of the great elephant party should guide us in all we do,” she said.
She thanked all the delegates for throwing their weight behind her husband and assured them of more developmental works in the constituency.
Constituency executives have tipped Mr Atta Akyea to win the April 25 primary because of his proven track record in spearheading development in the constituency.
“We love him...If you know Atta Akyea, you will just love him, the man is simple but hard-working,” Patience Asare, a party faithful said.
“He has brought boreholes to communities. He has brought school buildings, roads, streetlights, the CHPS compound, and a lot more. Many children are in school because he is ever ready to assist a needy child,” Ms Asare added.
