St. Augustine's College has successfully advanced to the quarter-finals of the 2023 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), securing their place through a resounding victory over St. Peter’s SHS and Aburi Girls SHS.
As the contest commenced, the two-time champions appeared to be on shaky ground, with just 17 points on the board compared to their opponents' 19 points.
However, in true NSMQ fashion, they executed a turnaround from the second round through to the fifth.
By the end of round two, St. Augustine’s College had surged ahead with 26 points, leaving St. Peter’s SHS at 23 points and Aburi Girls’ SHS at 14 points.
Even when faced with the challenging problem of the day in round three, which stumped many contestants, these schools managed to secure eight, seven, and seven points, respectively.
Recognising that the subsequent rounds could decide their fate, St. Augustine’s College, substituted one contestant, Joshua, for another, Benedict. This decision paid off, as they concluded round four with 50 points, while Aburi Girls had 31 and St. Peter’s had 43.
Maintaining their lead throughout the entire contest, St. Augustine’s College clinched victory in round five with a total of 56 points, successfully edging out St. Peter’s SHS and Aburi Girls SHS, who scored 43 and 34 points, respectively.
The Central Regional boys will square off against formidable opponents in the upcoming round.
Their challengers include Tamale SHS, who secured a solid 51 points in their one-eighth contest, and Keta SHTS, who scored a remarkable 70 points after an impressive performance - the highest score achieved in the competition thus far.
This promises to be a highly anticipated and thrilling matchup.
