The Old Vandals Association is accusing the Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana of scheming to end the age-long tradition of Commonwealth Hall being an all-male hall of residence.
According to John Mbroh, the acting president of the Association, Professor Kwesi Yankah took a unilateral decision to have the hall dismembered and turned into a mixed graduate hall.
“We have it on authority that the chairman of the residence board in the person of Professor Kwesi Yankah, the Pro-Vice Chancellor of the university had sadly enough, stated that the matter was meant only for information and implementation and not for discussion at the residence board meeting,” Mr Mbroh told the press on Monday.
The Executive Committee of the university had taken a decision to reconstitute the all-male hall into a mixed gender hall after some students of the Hall allegedly heckled the former United Nations Secretary General, Kofi Annan.
The university authorities said the decision was taken in the corporate interest of the university
But Mr Mbroh maintains that the decision has long been taken before the meeting.
He alleged that Prof Yankah had long pronounced on Radio Universe that the Commonwealth Hall would be turned into a mixed gender hall.
Mr Mbroh also questioned the timing of the announcement to convert the hall, saying it negatively affected the students.
“The announcement came on the eve of commencement of the second semester exams of the 2009/10 academic year.
“We submit that the timing alone has put the students through emotional, psychological and unjustifiable stress which in no uncertain terms undermines the corporate integrity of the university,” he said.
Mr Mbroh also called on the former UN Secretary General to intervene in the matter.
“Your excellency Busumuru Kofi Annan, we plead with you to come to our aid,” he said, adding that the government must also add its voice to the matter.
Joy News attempts at soliciting the reaction of the Pro-Vice Chancellor proved futile.
The University was also expected to organize a press conference on Monday.
