The Osei Tutu II Senior High School at Tetrem in the Afigya Kwabre District of the Ashanti Region has been closed down nine days before the official closing date following last Sunday’s students’ disturbances in the school.
The decision to close down the school was taken after an assessment of the situation by the educational authorities at both the regional and the district levels.
As a result of the closure, the end-of-term examinations have been shifted to the beginning of the second term.
The Ashanti Regional Director of Education, Mr J.K. Onyinah, told the Daily Graphic Wednesday that the decision to close down the school was arrived at to help save the school from further deterioration.
“As I speak, the main source of water for the school has been damaged by the students and it will not be prudent to allow them to stay. But we are confident that the situation will return to normalcy on the students’ return,” he said.
Mr Onyinah stated that the authorities would work hard to repair the damage caused to the water system before the school reopened.
He said a committee would be set up to go into the disturbances and make the necessary recommendations and indicated that any student found culpable would be punished accordingly.
Meanwhile, the police have picked up two students suspected to be part of those who rioted.
The Headmaster of the school, Mr Samuel Ekuoba Gyasi, who confirmed this in an interview with the Daily Graphic yesterday, said the arrests were without prejudice to the outcome of investigations into the incident.
Last Sunday, students of the school went on a violent demonstration that led to massive destruction of property belonging to the school and the housemaster, Mr Kwasi Yeboah.
The students did not understand why Mr Yeboah would conduct a search on them to seize mobile phones and unprescribed attire after some of the students had boycotted Sunday night’s church service.
