Ivorian President Alassane Quatarra has extended an invitation to his countrymen seeking refuge in Ghana to return home. Thousands of Ivorians fled the country in the heat of the political crisis that left close to a thousand people dead. Some of the refugees who came to Ghana settled in a camp in the Western region while others settled in communities in the Ashanti region. But there is relative peace in the country now following the ousting of Laurent Gbagbo and the installation of a new government led by Alassane Quatarra. At a ceremony to swear in the newly elected Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja, President Mills and his Ivorian counterpart President Ouattara discussed arrangements for the return of the Ivorians back home. President Quattara said the refugees must return to help build Ivory Coast as calm has returned to the world’s largest producer of cocoa. He applauded Ghana and President Mills for showing such hospitality towards his people and called on other countries to do same. "It was a very difficult period for all of us and I know that so many Ivorians on the Ghanaian soil is a burden for Ghanaians. I urge them to come back to Cote D’Ivoire and we will be working on that,” President Ouattara said. He said they are working on the country's security system to ensure that the country is safe again for all Ivorians. President Quatarra also thanked President Mills for the role he played in resolving the Ivorian crisis. He said President Mills assured him that he was going to speak to Mr Gbagbo to leave office and expressed his support for him after he won the disputed elections. President Mills on his part gave the assurance that government will facilitate their smooth return so they can help rebuild their country. He said the discussions between the two countries is to ensure that the Ivory Coast is brought back to normalcy and that the two countries will continue to collaborate to forge a stronger relationship for the benefit of the two nations.
