The Dansoman Divisional Police Command has impounded over 100 commercial vehicles for breaching the social distancing protocols introduced as part of measures to fight the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking to Joy News, the Divisional Command, ACP Isaac Asante, said despite the directives announced by the President on Friday, March 27, many commercial vehicles are still carrying more than required numbers of passengers, therefore, flouting the social distancing protocol.

He also observed that many commuters are using "going to the banks or buying medicines" as an excuse to violate the lockdown directives.

“A lot of Ghanaians are not law-abiding, they can’t take simple instructions. The president is asking you to stay at home for your own good and look at what is happening.

“Every commercial vehicle wants to operate. And I don’t even know if they are not operating at a loss,” he told Joy News’ Kwesi Parker-Wilson.

ACP Asante then called on drivers’ unions to ensure that their members comply with the lockdown directives to make the work of security forces easier.

“I think the GPRTU [Ghana Private Road Transport Union] must help us by asking their members to work on a rotational schedule. The Executives of the Unions can meet and ask at most 10 cars to operate on a daily basis,” he said.

Meanwhile, the drivers of these vehicles said they did not flout any of the lockdown measures for their cars to be seized.

“If we have done something they should tell us. When I was operating yesterday, the Police and soldiers who stopped me, questioned the passengers so why is that only here, they are stressing the drivers,” a driver said.

Another added: “We are just miserable here, no one is listening to us. When they see you, they ask you to pack your car and take your details any explanation that you give falls on deaf ears.”
