One person collapsed as anxious parents trooped to the Archbishop Porter Girls Senior High School following a suspected food poisoning incident.
The 60-year-old woman, who has since been rushed to the Effia Nkwanta Hospital, reportedly collapsed during a meeting between school authorities and parents.
The meeting which was to allay the fears of parents, ended in a stalemate as school authorities resisted attempts by parents and guardians to take away their wards, Joy News’ Western Regional correspondent Kweku Owusu Peprah said.
Health officials say “there is no cause for alarm” as the situation is under control, although some treated students are still complaining of drowsy nerves and diarrhoea.
Medical officers worked through the night attending to the over-two-hundred students who suffered complications from suspected food poisoning.
The Food and Drugs Board (FDB) has taken samples of food served the students and other foodstuffs in the school food store room for laboratory tests.
While food poisoning is the most probable cause, medical officers have yet to conclude their tests.
Meanwhile, a nutritionist at the University of Ghana is asking educational authorities to review the processes under which food is prepared and served on campuses.
Last year, a number of students from the university also suffered complications from a similar incident.
The Head of the Nutrition Department, Professor Tanoh Debrah believes food safety precautions are being taken for granted in schools.
