The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has given an update on the 11 persons who were arrested for engaging in baby harvesting and human trafficking during its undercover investigation in 2020.
At a press conference on Thursday, the EOCO Executive Director, Frank Adu Poku said out of the 4 babies rescued in their operation, the parents of one of them have been identified.
“The mother and father of the baby that was sold at Tema Regional Hospital after investigations have been identified. Statements have been taken from them.
“There was a lady who was at the centre of the selling of this child, was on the run, but she couldn’t hide. She was arrested on February 4 and currently on EOCO enquiry bay assisting with investigation,” he told the press.
The Medical and Dental Council (MDC) and EOCO on Wednesday, January 20 in a statement revealed that a team embarked on an undercover operation from June to November 2020 to investigate this illegal activity which been on the rise lately.
After five months of being undercover, the operation was successful in arresting 2 medical doctors, 2 social workers, 4 nurses, 2 mothers and 1 traditional birth attendant who are currently on bail pending further investigations.
The suspects; Dr. Hope Mensah Quashie, Dr. Noah Kofi Lartey, Leonard Agbley, Sylvia Awuseh, John Adorey Effie, Angela Ametepe, Doris Badu, Nancy Obaa Yaa Frimpong and Dede Gifty Anikpi were alleged to have played key roles in the trafficking of four babies.
The babies, according to the team, are in safe custody and are being properly taken care of at foster homes.
Moreover, Mr Adu Poku noted that the dockets for the persons arrested who are on EOCO inquiry bail are almost ready and will be sent to the Attorney General's office for advice and prosecution.
