The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested a 53-year-old man, Seth Welbeck, for allegedly threatening a police investigator with a firearm and possessing a weapon and ammunition without lawful authority.
In a press release issued on February 7, the Police said the arrest took place on Tuesday, February 3 following a court-related incident at the Accra Circuit Court.
According to the statement, the suspect was involved in a separate case of document forgery and had been served with a criminal summons to appear before the court.
After the court proceedings, Mr Welbeck was being escorted to the court cells when he asked the investigator for permission to lock his vehicle.
The Police said that during the process, the suspect suddenly retrieved a pistol from his car.
“In the process, the suspect suddenly retrieved a Smith & Wesson SD9 VE pistol loaded with nine rounds of 9mm ammunition from his vehicle and pointed it at the investigator, threatening him,” the statement said.
The Police said that the situation was quickly brought under control.
“The investigator, with the assistance of other court officials and witnesses, quickly disarmed the suspect,” the release added.
Mr Welbeck is currently in Police custody, assisting with investigations, and is expected to be put before the court to face charges.
The Accra Regional Police Command used the opportunity to caution the public against acts of violence and unlawful possession of weapons.
“The Command wishes to caution the general public to desist from any act of violence, threats, or possession of firearms and ammunition without lawful authority, as such actions pose a danger to lives and property,” the Police said.
The Police also reminded the public to respect court procedures and cooperate fully with law enforcement officers.
“The public is advised to strictly comply with lawful court processes and Police procedures at all times,” the statement said, warning that “any attempt to obstruct justice, intimidate public officers, or resort to violence will be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law.”
