The Police in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region have mounted an operation to rid the city of narcotic drug dealers and users.
Popular drug hubs, including 'Tinka Island' at Alabar, are on the radar of the Drug Law Enforcement Unit which is spearheading the exercise.
Nhyira FM's Ohemeng Tawiah joined the task force as it stormed targeted spots Wednesday morning and reports that about 500 heroin and cocaine addicts were driven away from the Tinka Island.

The police also demolished unauthorised structures in the drug enclave which is also home to women and children as young as eight months.
Personal belongings of the peddlers such as clothes and utensils were also seized during the operation.
Young men in the area are alleged to have contributed to the increasing rate of crime such as armed robbery.
The police hope that the operation will help reduce the crime rate and make the region more peaceful.

Unit Commander, ASP Jeremiah Alale who led the exercise called for the cooperation of landlords and residents in the area.
He advised residents not to connive with the drug peddlers and that those caught doing so will be dealt with appropriately.
No arrests were made during the operation.
ASP Alale said the exercise will be carried out periodically to ensure that the peddlers do not return to the area.
