An unspecified number of students have been picked up by the police to assist in investigations on the leakage of English Paper I in the ongoing West African Examination Council Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination. The Council on Thursday announced the cancellation of the English Paper 1, citing a leakage of the paper ahead of due date and widespread examination malpractices. Agnes Tei Cudjoe, Head of Public Relations at WAEC told Joy News’ Sammy Darko that the students were quizzed on various issues relating to the leakage and were released soon after. She said details of the investigations would be made public. Meanwhile there has been mixed reaction from students following the total cancellation of the papers. Some students who spoke to Joy News confirmed hearing the paper had leaked ahead of date but denied having access. They find it difficult to understand why they would be made to ‘pay for the sins’ of others. However, some students are in full support of the cancellation. They argued that once the paper had been compromised by some of their colleagues, everybody has to re-write the paper. The re-sit for the paper is set for the 27th of May, 2009.
