Police to get tough on unauthorized siren users

The Ashanti Regional Police Command is warning motorists who use sirens and bells without authority to desist from the practice or face the law.

Command officials say the rampant blowing of sirens in the region contravenes Road  Traffic Regulation, L.l. 2180.

Regional Police Commander, DCOP Kofi Boakye, warns people who contravene the legislation commit an offence.

He says offenders are liable, on conviction, to imprisonment for not less than 30 days or a fine or both.

“The command is therefore using this medium to announce to the general public, especially those unauthorized persons mention above that henceforth whoever flouts the regulation will be arrested and prosecuted, ‘’ DCOP Kofi Boakye emphasized.

He lists vehicles authorized to use sirens and bells on the road as those used for official purposes, including the presidential convoy as well as police, fire service and hospital or clinic ambulances.

Others are registered bullions recognized by licensing authority.

Section 74(3) of the Road Traffic Regulation 2012 clearly spells out vehicles authorized to use sirens or bells as warning appliance.

DCOP Kofi Boakye warned illegal siren users would be arrested and prosecuted without favour.

“No authorized person is exempted from this regulation and therefore the necessary punishment will be meted out to offending drivers if they should commit the offence”, he pointed out.
