Executives of the Polytechnic Administrators Association of Ghana (PAAG) from all ten polytechnics in the country have declared a vote of no confidence in the National Executive Committee. They are particularly contesting the intention of their President, Seth Kpedor for publicly stating that members of the association are pushing him to declare a strike over salary negotiations. The polytechnic administrators have subsequently dissolved the NEC and appointed an Interim National Executive to steer the affairs of the association. The decision was taken at a National Delegates Congress held in Kumasi, which was purposefully to deliberate on their conditions of service and placement anomalies on the single spine salary structure. The PAAG had identified what it says are some wide disparities between their members and their counterparts in other tertiary institutions regarding job re-evaluation and placement on the new salary structure. In a communiqué issued at the end of the congress, the group implored the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission to give an up-to-date feedback on proposals submitted by the association. According to them, Mr. Kpedor who they refer to as the ‘out-gone president’ failed to brief members of the association on proposals expected to have been submitted to the Commission. They are therefore questioning the basis on which he will tell the world that the members were forcing him to declare a demonstration. Local Chairman of PAAG at the Kumasi Polytechnic, Francis Austin told Luv FM “they all know the tenure of office of the National Executive expired in 2009 and they failed to deliver [after extension of their term], meanwhile, he came to lie to Ghanaians. He said we were going to meet to declare a strike action, meanwhile he had never spoken to any executive of the association about his intentions.” The group has meanwhile called on the government to give a fair hearing to the striking polytechnic teachers.
